We’ve all seen those videos of a bunch of young people seemingly having the time of their lives. Maybe they’re splashing each other with paint or putting together a DIY music performance. “Hold On,” the latest single from Vancouver’s Leisure Club, takes that idea and morphs it into something more twisted than it appears.
The song is undoubtedly summery, with buoyant guitars and a big chorus, repeating the lines “With our heads on fire” and “She told me she loved me/She wanted me madly.” It could be the best time of their lives, but it’s clear that that “best time” comes with a price. As the band describes it, the song
is a take on the absence of meaningful connections made during nights of excess. With heads on fire we saunter out of dark doorways looking for someone to help mask the comedown only to wake up and find exactly that; it was only a mask.
Take in the grand night of excess below, and be on the lookout for the band’s self-titled debut album on November 17.
