“Blackened,” the new track from Jojii aka Joel Vigilante, is an introduction to his upcoming album Sex and Death, an album which he describes as “a cornucopia of visceral and violent melody.” To echo Vigilante’s description, “Blackened” is a visceral and gripping listen. Among the swirling distorted instrumentation, it sounds as if Vigilante is tearing out each word he sings, in anguish and in search of relief.
About his new song, Vigilante says:
“Blackened” is a song about feeling compressed, put down, out of place, and very bruised. After being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder while working in a dead-end factory, I felt like I was at wit’s end both emotionally and physically. I wrote “Blackened” while seeking therapy treatment. It’s a song that I’ve used to express feeling like an outsider not just in my own head and heart, but in the world as well. It’s a song about living and working in an unforgiving, hardened environment while feeling tender in every way.
