Sometimes you just want to get up and expel all that latent energy in your body. What better than head-banging to the newest album from Calgary’s Cowpuncher?
No cows were harmed in the making of Hustle, their latest album that will see its official release on May 14. Until then, Grayowl is offering a stream of the whole thing.
Hustle is a completely unabashed rock-and-roll record. Booming guitar lines, “woah-ohs,” blistering solos, this record has it all. Opener “Crumble,” with its ominous organ in the background, makes a great opening statement and ends in a prolonged guitar solo. Group vocals make “White Veil” a feel-good, Japandroids-style rocker.”Kiss Kiss Kill” is sung like a rock manifesto, and “Straight Line” may just have you pumping your first in the air based on the sheer majesty of the guitar chords and call-to-action lyrics.
It’s not just a straight shot of plain rock and roll, however. “Later On” shows the band can harness a softer side if it wants to, with a folk-y touch at the beginning before the big guitars come in later. “Halfway” is a mournful look back at home and acts a great wind-down to the record.
