Every once in a while a song comes along that is so inherently catchy, so upbeat, that it can instantly improve one’s day. It’s like a ray of sunshine on an overcast day. That song this time around is the first track from Mary Cassidy & Jon Lawless, a wonderful track called “Carolina.”
This Guelph duo masterfully weaves together folk influences with indie pop execution, and “Carolina” is the first example of this. I (Michael) have a real weakness for folk duos, and even more so when the two people have such obvious chemistry. Lawless and Cassidy trade lyrics constantly, and the swells of horns and drum-machine-esque percussion make for a bit of pop that you might want to leave on repeat. I’ve already lost track of how many times I’ve listened to “Carolina” since yesterday.
Cassidy and Lawless will apparently be releasing an EP sometime soon, and you can be sure I’ll be swooping after it as soon as it’s available. In the meantime, stream “Carolina” below.
