Sidney York’s Top 10 Canadian albums of 2012

sidney yorkThe girls of Sidney York are huge fans of Canadian music, so we just had to have a “best of” list from them as well. Here are there 10 favourite Canadian records from this year:

Snowblink – Inner Classics
CBC calls it surf-folk. We call it the ideal album to chill out and relax to, and be transported away by the sounds washing over you.

Stars – The North
This album (and the booklet artwork) are just beautiful Canadiana.

John K. Samson – Provincial
We’ve basically loved every Weakerthans album ever made so we had really high hopes for this solo release… and it was awesome. Anyone who can write a super catchy tune involving a Master’s thesis is obviously a musical genius.

Mo Kenney – Mo Kenney
Beautifully crafted songs that are sung from the heart and are expertly produced by one of Canada’s finest, Joel Plaskett. An incredible first album.

Jenn Grant – The Beautiful Wild
Gorgeous vocals against a lush backdrop of sound.

Whitehorse – The Fate of the World Depends on this Kiss
What could be more perfect than the combination of Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland? Nothing. And this album is proof.

Yukon Blonde – Tiger Talk
In the category of “best album for singing along to at the top of your lungs when you’re home alone,” this is the clear winner.

Rococode – Guns, Sex and Glory
This Roco album is full of interesting, well-crafted songs, and vocals that make you want to melt.

Bahamas – Barchords
The sexiest album of 2012. Period.

Hands and Teeth – Hunting Season
Hands and Teeth is definitely our musical kindred spirit of the East. This album is energetic, yet with dark and introspective lyrics. And those are just the sort of musical creations us Sid kids love.
