Here’s what I would recommend:

  • If you can make it in, the Indies will be a great place to get a good sampling of some great talent. Some rising/risen stars include Dan Mangan, the Pack A.D. and Rich Aucoin, and you can even see Treble Charger who have started touring again.
  • El Mocambo once again has it going on, this time with the Pop Montreal Showcase that has acts like the Weather Station, Adam & the Amethysts and Reversing Falls.
  • There’s a good selection of geographically-scattered talent at Hard Luck. Royal Canoe from Winnipeg. Sidney York and Rococode from Vancouver. Papermaps and the Little Black Dress from Toronto. One of the strongest-looking showcases in my possibly uninformed opinion.
  • Speaking of strong-looking showcases, the Horseshoe Tavern may possible have its best CMW showcase. Bravestation, Chains of Love, Gentlemen Husbands, Two Hours Traffic, Wintersleep, Poor Young Things… Is your jaw kinda dropping? It should be.
  • Lee’s Palace is putting up a good fight for best showcase of the night as well. Its biggest attraction is undoubtedly the Inbreds but it’s also got Snailhouse, Sandman Viper Command and Whale Tooth.
  • If you are involved with the music industry and are reading this, go and see the industry-only showcase at the Rivoli. You will see Ben Caplan & the Casual Smokers. You will see the Mountains & the Trees. You will see Mike O’Neill. If you are not in the music industry, you will doubtless enjoy the showcase right after the industry-only affair. Wintersleep and Writers’ Strike among others will be dazzling. No wonder advance tickets are already sold out.
  • A lot of good singer-songwriters will be at the Sennheiser Library Lounge such as Jordan Klassen, Joshua Hyslop and Donovan Woods among others.
  • The Dakota Tavern seems to be selling out its shows quickly. This time it has Graydon James & the Young Novelists, Racoon Bandit, and all the way from Estonia, Ewert and the Two Dragons.
  • Brendan Canning will be hosting and DJing for a great night at the Garrison with the Balconies, ALX and Teenage Kicks.
  • The Velvet Underground has some good music playing such as Old English and Gay.
