Pat Sayers of Winter Gloves answers our Grayowl Questionnaire!

1) Where’d you get your name?

We found it in a cereal box. You know when you’re a kid and you get all excited to see what the toy is at the bottom of the box, and you’re ready to pour the cereal all over the breakfast table just to find it? Well, Charles did that and all he got was a slip of paper that said “Winter Gloves”. He figured he would make the best of it.

2) When did you start making music seriously?

About the time my Dad bought me my first drum. Before that I used to just play on all the pots and pans, and sometimes the Rubbermaid bins in the tool shed. My Mom got sick of me stealing the kitchenware and my Dad got tired of me dumping his tools out all over the yard…so that was the solution. Once I had my hands on a real drum, there was no turning back.

3) What are you listening to right now?

I’m listening to samples on my SPD-S. Recently had to take it in and get it repaired, so I’m reorganizing getting all the sounds back on it to pull off the best live show I can. I guess if you want me to be specific, listening to a lot of beeps and boops and some drum sounds.

4) What are some of your musical guilty pleasures?

The Killers. I love them. I’m not even kidding. There is just something about them that is both technically on the ball, and catchy pop at the same time. The kind of pop songs that stick with you, but that aren’t sugary coated and dripping with cheesiness.

5) Describe your music in one sentence.

Old man fun times afterschool dance party.

6) Where do you see yourself in six months?

I will likely still only be able to see myself in the mirror or in pictures/videos in six months. I don’t think technology is moving at a rapid enough pace to see myself any other way.

7) What has been the highlight of your career so far?

It’s a weird story, but I was at a truckstop in some random small town USA, flipping through some Men’s magazines (if you know what I mean) and much to my surprise, nestled in the pages between all these beautiful women, was a picture of Winter Gloves and an album review for About A Girl. That had me stoked for so long! Plus, the cashier thought I was crazy cause I was glowing when I brought the magazine to the counter and i tried to explain that I was buying it because I was in it. I don’t think I explained it properly, and I’m pretty sure she thought I posed in it.

8) What is the most unusual compliment/insult you’ve recieved as a musician?

This is both the best compliment and best insult…”I’m not trying to sleep with you or anything, I’d just like to take you home and rub my naked body all over your moustache.”

9) If you could go on tour with any band, disbanded or together, who would you tour with?

We would love to tour with <your band name here>! That would be so awesome! Can you imagine? <Your band name here> with special guests, Winter Gloves. That would be something else, no? I’d go see that show if I wasn’t already playing it. Seriously though, I would want to tour with The Who. Pretty sure the rest of the guys would have a different story to tell, but I’m doing the interview here, so it’s my call. Boys, we’re touring with The Who, pack your bags!

10) If you could be on the soundtrack for any TV show or movie, which one would you choose?

I would love to hear Winter Gloves on House, but I’m pretty sure the other guys would say something along the lines of How I Met Your Mother or True Blood. I’m just not sure we’re at the sexy, bloody, vampire level yet. Maybe next album.

11) What do you do for fun?

What could be more fun than touring in a band with your best friends and getting to see the world? Not much. Going for ice cream during a heatwave is up there though.

12) If you weren’t doing music what would you do?

I would be miserable and begging my parents for money so I didn’t have to work a job I hated. Hopefully it never gets to that point. All of us are lucky enough to have jobs in the music industry in various capacities, so it is always there for us.

13) What do you think will be a major trend in the near future?

Something awful that will drive me crazy and make me feel like an old man complaining about whatever it is. Or grunge music. Can that make a comeback sometime soon? That, I could get behind. Might have to call my mom and dig up my old ripped up jeans and plaid shirts…oh wait, have those been a trend recently?

14) What current trend do you think needs to stop?

Fluorescent __________. Seriously? Your shirt is too loud, can you turn it down?

15) What would you be doing if you weren’t doing this survey?

I would be finishing the movie I started 2 nights ago with my girlfriend and didn’t finish because I was laughing too hard and I thought I was going to wake up our roommates. Yeah, Death At A Funeral is that funny.
