We, the esteemed Members of the Parliament, have elected Coeur de Pirate as our first Choice of the new decade.
I first discovered this Quebecois act when her song “Commes des Enfants” was the offered as a free iTunes download at Starbucks a few months ago. I was instantly smitten with her fragile voice, the simple piano melody and the adorable French lyrics. I turns out I wasn’t the only one.
Last February, Béatrice Martin, the girl behind the stage name, wowed many when “Commes des Enfants” became only the second French song to top CBC Radio 3’s top thirty chart. She received further recognition from the radio station at last year’s Bucky’s, where she won “Best Reason to Learn French” and “Sexiest Musician”.
Reviews for Coeur de Pirate’s 2008 debut EP, Coeur de Pirate, were largely favourable and spent 40 weeks on the Canadian charts. The album also charted abroad in Switzerland and France. The album was also nominated for Franchophone Album of the Year at the 2009 Juno Awards, and was short-listed for the 2009 Polaris Music Prize.
Another thing that makes Coeur de Pirate’s success so noteworthy is that she’s managing to make a mark on and carve her niche in the male-dominated indie music scene. In spite of her gender, she’s respected as a talented pop songwriter and musician. How many people voted the sexiest anything can also claim that?
Until June, Coeur de Pirate will be touring extensively throughout Quebec before heading off to Europe to entertain the folks in Belgium, France and Luxemburg. Here’s hoping that she’ll visit Ontario soon!
Bien fait, Coeur de Pirate ! Nous ici à Grayowl Point souhaitons que tout aille bien pour vous cette année.
